HARBOUR BRIDGE SCHEME
Will Private Company Build? URGENT MEETING THIS EVENING IT is understood that the administration of affairs concerning the proposed Auckland Harbour bridge has not been altogether satisfactory to members of the Harbour Bridge Association and it is said that steps will be taken at an urgent special meeting, to be held this evening, to improve matters. It is also understood that certain proposals to come before the meeting will be keenly opposed and that there may be a good deal of plain speaking.
jyjß. R. H. GREVILLE is president of the association and the two vice-presidents are the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, Leader of the Opposition, and Mr. G. O’Halloran, of Auckland. Both vice-presidents are out of Auckland at the present time.
It was stated today that the chances of building a bridge across the harbour —possibly by a private company —have never been brighter than they are at the present time, providing that the association gets down definitely to business.
The engineer who is in charge of building the huge bridge across thp. Sydney Harbour, which is now nearing completion, is willing to come across to Auckland *md report on the project here.
He has not yet been invited, but it is believed that he would come if an invitation were extended to him.
Events concerning the harbour bridge should move rapidly this week if definite conclusions are reached at the meeting this evening, and it has been stated that a start could be made with the bridge as soon as the way has been cleared.
