NEW TELEPHONE LINK

NORTHCOTE-CITY SERVICE About 50 automatic telephones have now been brought into operation at Northcote and the cables being run under the sea to the Ponsonby sub-exchange- This cable, which carries 300 pairs of wires, will be sufficient to supply all needs for some years to come. Several manual telephones are still in operation on this part of the North Shore, the Birkenhead exchange having been retained. Many subscribers prefer to use this limited service at the lower rates, £6 yearly for a house and £8 for a business, as against £8 10s and £ls yearly on the automatic system.

The exchange at Birkenhead formerly had 70 subscribers.
