TROUT FISHING GOOD
IMPROVEMENT IN CATCHES LAST SEASON RESTOCKING ADVISED A marked improvement in trout fishing in all districts, compared with recent years, is reported by the general manager of health and tourist resorts in his annual report to Parliament. The suggestion is made that intensive restocking of all local waters, and the addition of new blood from the Tongariro River hatchery to outlying lakes and rivers, would prove of the greatest benefit. In the Waikaremoana area the quality and size of the trout was particularly marked, the lake containing an abundance of food for the fish. During the closing months of the past season the condition of the trout caught in Lake Tarawera was excellent, but, because of the better facilities, Lake Rotoiti was fast becoming a successful rival as a fishing ground. The number .and substantial nature of new cottages of anglers, erected at Rotoiti, testified to the popularity of the lake. The catches at Lake Okataina closely followed Lake Waikareiti for the best average in large trout. The cycle of diseased and ill-condi-tioned trout of the Rotorua lakes was rapidly passing its transitory period, according to the report. If adequate methods were adopted to conserve and inci’ease the food supply and complete the present survey of the thermal fishing in regard to the elimination of diseased and unfit fish, it was probable that Rotorua fishing would again be brought up to the high standard existing 25 years ago.
The finest river fishing was obtained in the Waikato River from below the Huka Falls to the Aranuni Lake boundary below Ongaroto. The heavy restocking of the past few years was now giving great results. It was intended to do more clearing of scrub along the banks, as in many places the best trout had their feeding grounds along almost inaccessible places.
