TAUPO RAILWAY
PETITIONERS WANT WORK RESUMED “ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY” THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Monday. Requesting the immediate resumption of work on the Taupo railway which was abandoned last year, Mr. Dynes Pulton, farmer, of Tuakau, and 17 others stated in a petition to Parliament today that the land could be readily brought into good pasture by modern methods at a very moderate cost. It was eminently suitable for dairying and could be made as good as the Waikato country. The petitioners claim that the country comprises by far the largest area of land now available to New Zealand for closer settlement and that the railway is absolutely necessary. Two Royal Commissions and two' Parliamentary committees had unanimously recommended the construction of the railway and Parliament had authorised the construction as far as Reporoa and already a large sum of public money had been spent.
