In the Market Place

EGGS STILL LOWER FIJI KUMERAS ARRIVE A further reduction of one penny a dozen in the price of all grades of hen and duck eggs was made at the city markets this morning. Supplies are increasing steadily, and values will fall correspondingly. The demand, however, is also growing, and the output is little in excess of the buyers’ needs. The first supply of kumeras from Fiji was on sale at the city market auctions this morning, realising prices slightly in advance of those for the Tauranga product. These are new season supplies, and will fill the gap before the new ltumera crop in New Zealand is ready. The mild weather of the past week has brought forward a better quality of cauliflower, and. increasing supplies will bring prices still lower next week. Already there are heavy supplies of cauliflowers, as well as of cabbage, lettuce, and celery on the market. New potatoes and other vegetables in season are being offered in fair numbers. The demand is fair. Little improvement has been shown of late in the market for apples, and pofirs, and prices are about the same now as for some weeks past; Lemons are coming in in larger quantities, and prices have dropped correspondingly. A small parcel of guavas realised about 4s a case. Tree tomatoes are proving more plentiful than usual at this time of the year, and the large quantities coming to hand have sent values down. Hothouse tomatoes are about the same as last week. Two shipments of fruit arrived from overseas today. The Waipahi brought fresh supplies of Island fruits, principally oranges, which were becoming in short supply. Aitutaki repacks being the principal offering. The Maunganui had on board mandarins and pines from Australia. Poorman oranges are meeting with a poor demand, small fruit proving almost unsaleable.
