DAIRY PRODUCE OUTLOOK
A RATHER GLOOMY VIEW -A rather gloomy view is taken of the butter position by Messrs. A. H. Turnbull and Co., New Zealand agents for W. Weddel and Co., London, in a review, published under date August “The butter market has remained very steady throughout the month with a slightly firming tendency toward the end of July and the first week in August, states the review. Latest cables, however, report that the market is somewhat easier and quiet. Messrs. W. Weddel and (To., Ltd., cable us that German buyers had been showing considerable interest in all Continental butters in view of the expected increase in tariff on August 1. However, this increase has been definitely postponed, causing an easing on the part of the German buyers and a general weakening in the demand for all butters. Our principals also advise us that approximately 80,000 boxes butter which the trade expected to be landed in Canada have been carried on to the United Kingdom and will be discharged there this month. Weather conditions on the Continent are now favourable to production. Our principals advise that they expect a low market, and in their opinion there is more likely to be a gradual decline in quotations than an improvement.
“Messrs. Weddel cable us that the retail demand for New Zealand cheese is disappointing, and the bad weather has been, to some extent, responsible for the lack of demand. Canadian cheese has been freely offered, and has the effect of weakening the market slightly. Any great improvement is not anticipated.’’
