BOOKMAKERS RAIDED IN THE CITY SEVERAL BEFORE COURT Described as a hard man to catch, Harry Clifton Sallery, aged 39, appeared at the Police Court this morning before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., on a charge of keeping a common gaming house in Quay Street. He was fined £IOO. gALLERY, who was arrested by Detectives Nalder and Belton this morning, pleaded guilty. ‘‘Sallery, who has an office in Glad stone Buildings, Quay Street, was seated at his table carrying on the business of a bookmaker, when he was visited by the detectives,” said De-tective-Sergeant Kelly. Accused had asked what was the charge against him, and when told, had admitted it. BIG BUSINESS “He has one of the largest bookmaking connections in Auckland.” said Mr. Kelly. ‘‘He has been convicted three times previously.” Mr. Hunt: When was be last before the Court? Detective-Sergeant Kelly: On November 26, 1928. Mr. Hunt: That’s some time ago. “He’s a hard man to catch,” said Mr. Kelly. “He recently sacked two of his clerks and there was probably a lack of supervision.” “Well, you caught him easily this morning,” said Mr. Hunt, as he fined Sallery £IOO.
Fines of £IOO each, with the alternative of three months’ gaol, were imposed by Mr. Hunt on John Prenter. and Raymond Lewis, both of whom pleaded guilty to using premises in Warwick Chambers, Queen Street, as a common gaming house.
