* INJURY TO OMEO NATIONAL RACING FIXTURE r LATEST WITHDRAWALS / Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Trainer Gillett stated this morning that Lord Ranald is a doubtful starter in the Grand National Steeples tomorrow, but Wharncliffe will definitely go to the post. A. McDonald has to ride Corneroff in the Grand National Steeples, and JC. Robinson will probably be on Aurora Borealis. Matu was galloped half a mile this morning and appears to have recovered from the bruised heel he suffered in a school on Saturday. Omeo, however, is under a cloud, and is by no means a sure starter. He was found suffering a severe cut to the near hind leg just below the hock yesterday morning, and light exercise is all that has been given him since. Llyn Du will not start in the Trial Hurdles, and Tourist has been scratched for the Winter Cup. NEW STANDS WAITING FOR BETTER TIMES L \ AUCKLAND RACING CLUB’S PLANS The launching of a comprehensive rebuilding scheme at Ellerslie by the Auckland Racing Club has been deferred until more prosperous times arrive, said the president, Sir Edwin Mitehelson, in his address to members of the club at the annual meeting this afternoon. “No improvements of any magnitude were undertaken during the year, the work carried out at Ellerslie being mainly ordinary maintenance and the regrading of the training tracks where necessary,” said the president. “The financial position of the club has in consequence much improved, and if equally good results are obtained during the next few years the club may with a certain degree of confidence, make a start in carrying out the improvement scheme that was outlined by the committee a few years ago. “Your committee much regrets that the commencement of the addition to the main stand and the erection of the members’ new stand has been so long delayed, but the financial stringency prevailing prevented it from proceeding with any large works that would involve the club in considerable indebtedness. The committee’s prudence in this respect has been fully justified under existing conditions, and until more prosperous times are in sight it is desirable that our existing liabilities should be cleared before launching any scheme that may very seriously hamper the club’s operations.” The race is to the strong. The weak must lag behind, The strong arm has its way, So has the powerful mind. In combat weaklings lose,

Topere and Taboo covered half in 57, and Cliarmeuse and Sleipner, with light weights up, half up the back in 52 4-5. Omeo has received a cut on the near hind leg. He was not out yesterday, but walked and trotted on the lead today. Matu bfuised a heel on Saturday and was not worked yesterday, but he pulled up well after a spin over half a mile today. POOR JUMPING DECLINE IN RACING NEED FOR ENCOURAGEMENT The dearth of jumpers and the deterioration in the class of those now seen on the turf ■were referred to by Sir Edwin Mitchelson in his presidential address at today’s annual meeting of members of the Auckland Racing Club. He said:—“One regrettable feature that I feel I must refer to was the apparent deterioration last season in the number as well as class of jumping horses throughout the Dominion. This was particularly noticeable during the winter, the horses not being up to the usual standard, and it should be the care of all racing clubs to see that more encouragement is given to this class, otherwise hurdle racing and steeplechasing will become less and less popular, and probably cause a certain loss of interest in the sport. “The Auckland District Committee has thought it desirable to take up this matter, and has circularised all clubs in this district with a view to its putting on a jumping race each day of its meetings to encourage owners to train their horses for this class of sport, and also give increased opportunity to hurdle horsemen to become more proficient in their calling and be jn a position to augment their earnings.” RACING FINANCE AUCKLAND CLUB’S YEAR £59,000 IN STAKE MONEY In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet at the annual meeting this afternoon of members of the Auckland Racing Club, the president. Sir Edwin Mitchelson, congratulated members on the success of last season’s operations, which resulted in a surplus of £15,909 39s sd. As mentioned in the report, after allowing for depreciation £12,070 11s 6d, there remains a balance of £3,839 7s lid to be added to capital account, which now stands at £124,756 15s 7d. During the year £59,000 was provided by the club in prize money, while owners contributed £340 in sweepstakes. The racing at Ellerslie throughout the year was good, the various events being well contested, and notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather at two of the meetings the attendances were quite good. WINTER CUP SCRATCHING Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Tourist was scratched for the Winter Cup at 9.40 a.m. today.
