PLAY IN FINE RAIN
MATCH AT NORTHAMPTON WITH AUSTRALIA HORNIBROOK SHINES United r.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Saturday. The Australian cricketers today commenced a three days’ match against Northamptonshire at Northampton. The visitors’ team comprised Woodfull, Richardson, Jackson, Kippax, Bradman, Fairfax, Wall, a’Beckett, Walker, Hornibrook and Hurwood. Northampton won the toss and batted on a hard wicket and when stumps were drawn had completed their first innings for 249 runs. Although the early batsmen made a good stand, Bakewell and Timms registering 162 of the total, the remainder offered little resistance to Hornibrook, whose bowling figures were most creditable. The weather was dull. Kippax’s left leg was still bandaged as a result of strained thigh tissues. Misty rain began to fall as soon as the Australians took the field. WOOLLEY GOES When Bakewell had made 11 he cut Wall hard into Fairfax’s left hand, but the fieldsman dropped the. ball. a’Beckett went on to bowl at 28 and beat Woolley with his third ball, a “yorker.” Rain stopped play at 12.50 p.m. The game was resumed at 1.10 p.m., though there was still a slight drizzle. Hornibrook’s first ball sent back Hawtin, who gave an easy catch to Wall. Play continued slowly in miserable conditions until luncheon, when the score was two for 38. Welcome sunshine prevailed after the interval. Wall bowled well, and his deliveries sometimes rose dangerously high. Bakewell and Timms began to score at a good rate and brightly. Bakewell reached his 50 in 115 minutes. Fairfax, however, presented no difficulties and ’the 100 appeared on the board in 125 minutes. Hurwood was put on to bowl and the scoring immediately slackened. The Australians were missing Grimmett and McCabe, and the batsmen were providing unexpected resistance under good conditions. JACKSON LIMPS OFF Hurwood ended Bakewell's fine innings of 175 minutes. He had hit eight fours. He tried to drive a ball, but failed to make a complete contact and Jackson ran in and effected a good catch low down at mid-on. Bakewell is regarded in some quarters as a possible successor to Hobbs. There were 10,000 spectators at tea time when the score was three for 152. On resuming Jupp was enterprising, but was smartly snapped up at the wickets by Walker off Hurwood Timms meanwhile was careful, but eventually gave Richardson an easy catch in trying a cover drive. He had hit 11 fours and given a chanceless display. Jackson, after chasing a ball, limped off the field and was replaced by Oldfield. The remainder of the wickets fell cheaply. The fielding was patchy with the exception of that of Bradman, who was brilliant.
