FINAL SCHOOLING AT RICCARTON MATU AND OMEO INJURED Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The most interesting piece of schooling at Riccarton this morning was provided by Omeo (L. Jarvis), Matu (R. Syme) and Corncroff (A. McDonald), who went over half the country they will have to traverse on Tuesday. The three started off with the sod wall at the entrance to the back, and Paracte'r (M. Bayley) followed half a furlong behind. At the third obstacle, the first of the kennels double, Matu refused, but was taken back and put Paradcr was going at a great pace and he headed the others before the brush at the top of the straight was reached. However, ho was too willing and lost his rider. Omeo and Corneroff, with Matu following, then completed the round and continued on to the kennels double again. The firstnamed pair took this in good style, but Matu baulked a second time. Brilliant Jumping Corneroff and Omeo fenced in brilliant style and found no difficulty with the Riccarton country- Omeo was subsequently discovered with a nasty cut on the leg, and this is causing much anxiety to his trainer. Matu, however, gave a disappointing display as, besides refusing the kennels doublo twice, ho nearly went out at Cutts’s. He came back with a bruised foot, and this will not add to his chances. Corneroff is definitely to start in the big Steeples. Kapuna (W. Cooper) was the only other National horse to go over the big fences. He did a complete round without fault. Kulrango (I. Tilson) and Airtight (L. Jarvis) set out together to do a round of the steeples, but Kulrango ran off at the top of the straight after doing about half the assignment. Airtight will race on the final days; he gave a good exhibition. Marco Polo (I. Tilson) did a round of
the schooling obstacles in the .centre and jumped well. French Fleet and Tractarian were schooled over two sod walls and three brush fences, jumping in fine style. Over the Battens The most attractive school over hurdles was that of Mister Gamp (A. K. Ellis) and Llyn Du (A. McDonald). Both put plenty of vim into their jumping and the pace was on solid from the start. Mister Gamp, whose five fences were one more than the number crossed by Llyn Du, is exceedingly well and must be given more than a chance of carrying his big weight round successfully in the National Hurdles. Nukumai (A. Skipper) and Craigmore (W. Cooper) also jumped well over eight hurdles, but they did not go so fast as the former pan". Craigmore started behind Nukumai, but was almost on terms at the finish. Went Over Two Miles Pangolin (E. Shaw) went over two hurdles at the back three times, covering a distance well over two miles. He has made a lot of improvement lately. Exide (W. Cooper) and Airforce (A. McDonald) jumped six hurdles together pleasingly. The latter has attracted notice since he arrived. Rigoletto (H. Dulieu) and Zippor (A. Tricklebank) jumped a round (over four hurdles). Each appeared more intent in getting over the fences than in registering time. Other National horses were galloped on the course proper or were given strong work on the sand. The galloping was all done on the course proper, with the hurdles 40 feet out. On the Flat Noteworthy, who will race on the final day if the going is firm, went half a mile up the back in 52 2-5. Riri and Kakara did the last three furlongs of a half-mile sprint in 38 3-5. Hurly Burly, alone, reeled off six furlongs in 1.1 S, the last half taking 52 2-5. Battle Colours was a clear length too good for Subdivision at the end of seven furlongs in 1.35 4-5. Staghunter, Tourist and Toxeuma jumped off at the seven-furlongs post. Tourist dropped out in the straight and Staghunter was overhauling Toxeuma at the finish. The time was 1.33 2-5. Hounslow finished a length in front of Gustavo at the conclusion of six furlongs, done in 1.24. Hacks’ Smart Sprint Lord Thomond and Painkiller wound up the last half mile of their five-fur-long task in 51, the full distance taking a shade under 1.6. Their time for the half was approached only by Arrowmir, whose time‘was 51 1-5. Full Feather finished more strongly than Semper Paratus at the end of seven furlongs in 1.36 2-5. They came home the last half-mile in 54. After Ten and Gold Mint registered 1.36 2-5 for seven furlongs together. Gold Mint finished in front. Arikinui, Rational 11. and Rasouli finished in that order at the end of six furlongs in 1.21 4-5. Teri and Portray galloped six together, but were not timed. Sleipner and Charmeuse took 1.8 3-5 for live, and West Dome and Membo did a mile together in 1.49 3-5, the last half in 53 4-5. West Dome for Jumpers’ Flat West Dome is very well and should run prominently in the Jumpers’ Flat Race, which has been chosen for him. E. ride him. Appeal did five furlongs in 1.7, coming home the last half-mile in 53. Topere was two lengths Mn front of The Raider at the finish of six furlongs in 1.24 2-5. The last half-mile took 55 2-5. Thurso and Discourse, who will be seen out on the final day, sprinted five furlongs together in 1.10 2-5. On Top took 55 for half a mile. This morning’s arrivals from the North included Aurora Borealis, Disrank, Royal Opera, Akbar, Black Mint, Royal Game, Diana’s Lad and Deluge^
