COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW Details of the quantity and value of the wool sold in New Zealand during the year ended June 30, 1930, together with the amount held over, have been prepared by Dalgety and Company, Limited. The quantity of wool sqld for the period was 42 5,902 bales, /which realised £5,130.507. Wool unsold was reported as 126,204 bales, valued at £ 1,521,785. The destinations of the wool disposed of have been ascertained as follows: —United Kingdom, 224.277 bales; France, 59,500; Belgium, Holland and Denmark, 5,500; Germany and Austria, 52,500: Italy and Switzerland, 6,000; Russia, Norway , and Sweden, 4,125; United States, 11.000; Canada. 5,500; India, 2,000; Australia, 4,00o‘: local manufacturers, 18,000; local scourers, 43,000; total, 425,602. Included in the United Kingdom tota 1 was 36,000 bales bought by speculators lor resale in London. The sales and average prices a bale at the Dominion selling centres lor the wool year were as follow:
Included in Wellington totals are 11 bales Nelson and 104 bales Blentieim wool; and Napier tota] includes 1,279 bales Gisborne wool. BUTTER AND CHEESE 9 DAIRY BOARD’S REVIEW The New Zealand Dairy Prodm e Board has received the following advice from its London office, dated August 7, prices for last week being in parentheses: Butter New Zealand: Salted. 136 s to 137 s Cl36s to 138 s): unsalted, 150 s (150 s); first whey, 128 s (130 s); second whey, 126 s (128 s). Australian: Salted. 3 35s to 136 s (134 s to 1365); unsalted, 134 s to 138 s (134 s to 13Ss). Argentine: Unsalterl, 124 s to 130 s (128 s to 1345). Cream: Salted, 136 s (138 s); unsalted, 140 s (1425). Danish: F.0.b., 141 s (1455); spot, 147 a (154 s to 1565). Dutch: Unsalted, 144 s (144 s to 1465). Estonian: 335 s (1425). Latvian: 1355. Siberian: 332 s (132 s to 3 34sV Polish: 114 s to 128 s (110 s to 128 s). Market q*uiet. Retail prices unchanged. Danish retail price still Is 7d. New Zealand. Is sd. English: Finest farmers, 92s to IOCs (92s to 300 s). Market steady. Retail prices uuclianged. MERCHANTS’ REPORTS Merchants report receipt of overseas cables as follow: Leonard and Son, Limited, from A. C. Roxvson Limited, London, under date August B:—“Cheese. new Zealand, white, 76s to 775; coloured, S2s; the demand is steady, and the market firm, and unlikely to decline further. Butter: New Zealand, first grade, 1345; finest, 1365; the demand is slow, and the market firm; the outlook is uncertain.’’ Amalgamated Dairies Limited from their London office: ’Butter, Anchor, 140 s, but in view continued absence, demand offers clown to 136 s now more general. Danish after sudden drop to 138 s, gradually firmed, 1425; retail Danish now generally Is 6d; New Zealand unchanged Is sd. Cheese white, 77/78, market lightly firmer; coloured, 82s, market firm; Canadian, 79s c.i.f.; retail unchanged.” AUSTRALIA’S DEBTS TOTAL NOW £1,100,597,197 On June 30 last, according to papers table in Canberra, the other day, the total public debt, Federal and States amounted to £1,100,597,197. Of this sum £526,968,663 was owing in Australia, £525,785,833 in London, and £47,842,700 in New York. The Commonwealth debt at June 30 stood at £372.957,361, and the States' debts at The New York portion of the debt was held as follows:—Commonwealth, £17,155,717; and, States, £30,686,982. Annual interest liabilitv had reached £55,365,449, of which £ 27,769,74 Sis payable in Australia, £25,184,802 in London, and £2,410.899 in New York. Interest a head has grown from £ 2 5s in 1912 to £8 12s in 1930; the average rate of interest payable was £3 11s Icl in 1912, and £5 0s 7d in 1930. In 1919 the gross public debts of the States were £397,471,560. The debt of Victoria was £ 53,395,483; it is now returned at £ 155,719,588, with an annual interest liability of £7,743.075. ROWSON DAIRY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP Messrs. Leonard and Son, Limited, Auckland agents for A. C. Rowson, Limited, butter importer of London, advise that the Rowson Scholarship has again been awarded to Mr. L. J. Ilhnter, enabling this student to have a further term at the Massey College. The object of the scholarship is to train promising students to become efficient factory managers.
