FILLY FOR AVONDALE STAKES
SIR RUSSELL’S TROUBLE Special to THE SUN TJJ AROHA, Today. i,'or the last racing season the Te iroha rider, E. A. Keeping, is fourth „„ the list of winning jockeys in the dominion, with 50 wins. As there are ™ less than 530 jockeys and appren?£,=s licensed by the Racing ConferppVe. Keesing’s position in the list is hiahly creditable. Local entrants for tlio Pakuranga fiviure this month are \ oliniond, Honiton Marble King and Vulstreet. The ' first named are being privately fra.ined by their owner, Mr. P. A. swney. "in the ’meantime Valstreet is being worked at Mutamata, but Marble King is being spelled in the on the stress of work at his thoroughbred farm. Mr. 11. wines has sent his three-year-old gelding, King Win. over to A. Tinker’s Frankton stable. As there is plenty of trying tackle in the team, a line will soon be gained as to whether the son of King Lu is galloping up to expectations. He is highly assessed by his owner, who in his time lias bred several good performers. A Forward Filly Mr. I. Tam’s Weather vane filly is quite a likely competitor for the Avondale Stakes. One thing in her favour is that she has done a fair amount of work during the winter, and has shown no signs of soreness. If it is decided that she is to compete at Avondale, she will be taken there some weeks prior to the meeting, in order to further her education. Indolent, who lately bore evidence of muscle soreness, has been successfully treated for this ailment by Trainer A. E. Cox. and is now striding along much more freely. In conformation generally he is a much improved horse. Master Latour. looking burly in condition, is again in work, this time in charge of Claude Whale. But for a alight affection of the respiratory organ this General Latour gelding might have added to his wins last season. He seems to be all right again and may yet perform successfully. Improving the Wind Dr. Ring is to perform an operation for throat trouble on Sir Russell. It is expected he will be ready for work again in less than a month, so he may be racing in October. Bast season the Archiestown gelding was a good stake earner, and judging by looks promised to do even better this year. While he is on the resting list J. H. Wallace will recommission the Tonbridge gelding. Antique, who is looking in first-class condition to commence work. He has proved a good galloper and will not be hurried in his preparation. Yesterday morning on the grass track Miss Albyn executed serviceable work, trotting and sprinting in ?ood style. She is standing up to her work very satisfactorily, and will be one of the good conditioned ones to take on the Southern trip for the spring racing at Dannevirke and Marton this month. Cox’s Lord Star Ally is developing splendidly, and her smooth style of galloping denotes she has pace. Indolent and Cilenison put in strong pacing, while Sir Russell and the Lucullus gelding bowled along in a determined manner. The Weathervane filly showed brilliancy in a two-furlong sprint, handling the heavy going well. Local course improvements this week include the shifting of the judged box and the marking of the various distances around the new tracks. The metalled roadway into the property will be completed next week.
