LOST COAL
SALVAGE EFFORTS IN VAIN An unsuccessful attempt was made to J recover the 50 tons of coal which fell into the harbour when the Xorthcote and Birkenhead Gas Company’s barge j Afoehau capsized at the King’s Wharf at midday on Monday. The operations were conducted by j the scow Ngahau, but were not a ; success because the coal was composed ! largely of dust and slack, most of which had either become embedded in the mud or difted to sea. Each time the grab was hoisted it brought more mud than coal to the surface and the coal was no use for fuel. The material was finally dumped at sea by the Nga- < ha u. The use of the grab caused the coal j to spread over the harbour bottom and 1 when soundings were afterward taken ; by a harbour board official, the depth | of the water was found to be the same i as before the mishap to the Aloehau. i
