MEMBER CRITICISES TALKIE PRODUCTION LABOUR MEN DISAGREE THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Cries of “What rot!” and “It is one of the finest pictures shown in New Zealand!” greeted Mr. J. B. Fletcher (Independent—Grey Lynn), when he asked an urgent question requesting the withdrawal of the film. “Anna Christie,” from the Regent Theatre, Wellington. , Mr. Fletcher asked the Minister of Internal Affairs, the lion. P. A. de ia Perrelie, if he would have the film withdrawn until the Appeal Board had had an opportunity of viewing it. Was not the picture an exhibition of law-breaking in a friendly state? Was it not vulgar where it was not indecent? Would it not have a vicious influence? Mr. P. Fraser (Labour —Wellington Central): What picture? Mr. Fletcher: “Anna Christie.” “What rot!” boomed Mr. Fraser. “It is one of the finest pictures ever shown in New Zealand!” avowed Mr. E. J. Howard (Labour —Christchurch South). The Minister replied that he had not seen the picture but promised to have inquiries made and to advise Mr. Fletcher later.
