WIN FOR HAWKE’S BAY
NORTH AUCKLAND BEATEN FINE GAME AT HASTINGS Press Association HASTINGS/ Wednesday. Before 2,000 people at Nelson Park today Hawke’s Bay defeated the North Auckland touring Rugby team by 27 ! points to 17 in a game full of thrills. The second spell was most exciting, s The Hawke’s Bay forwards attacked from the start and after five minutes* play Grenside, with a splendid effort, kicked a penalty goal. The home side 1 returned to the attack and North Auckland was again penalised. Grenside kicked another goal. Ryan, W. Rika and Fletcher broke 1 away in a sensational run to the corner, but when the ball came out to the visiting backs they were bustled by the . home forwards. Following a hot attack Grenside won a long chase for the ball and scored behind the posts, converting the try. Ground gained by the bustling Hawke’s Bay forwards was lost by tho backs, who were bustled by | the spoiling tactics of the visitors. A sudden breakaway by North Auckland had Hawke’s Bay in difficulties. The ball was handled by half a dozen players before Lambie intercepted a pass on the goal line. it was a close call. The interval came with the score 11 —0 in Hawke's Bay’s favour. Upon resuming North Auckland attacked hotly, but the home forwards cleared and Gillespie made the best run of tho game to reach the twentyfive before sending Grenside over behind the posts. Setford converted. North Auckland's efforts finally broke the defence, W. Rika forcing his way across the line. He converted with a great kick. Hawke’s Bay 16. North Auckland 5. The visitors were playing better, the backs handling the ball with more precision and making the game open. Heffernan (Hawke’s Bay) and Barrich (North Auckland) were injured and were replaced by' Pearson and Sellars, respectively. Gillespie notched the next try for Hawke’s Bay and Setford’s kick hit a post. North Auckland rallied and a good passing rush took play in front of the posts, where Nicholls landed a great field goal. Within a minute Robinson intercepted a Hawke’s Bay pass and sot the backs in action, Sellars crowning the effort with a great try, making the scores 19 —14 in Hawke’s Bay’s favour. After this reverse Hawke's Bay attacked. Kerr was bustled and Wilson raced over near the posts. Two minutes later Gillespie scored between the | posts. A forward rush by the visitors ’ saw Wells cross at the corner just on . the call of time, making the scores: Hawke’s Bay 27 • North Auckland 17

Management Committee of the Auck land Rugby Union decided iast even ing to hold a competition for the Pollard Cup. The games are to commence on Saturday week, and entries will close on Monday at noon. The clubs were circularised by the union to test their feeling on the question of continuing to play up to the end of the season. The majority of replies were in favoivr of games being found to keep the players occupied, although some clubs made it clear that they would be unable to put in complete teams owing to losses through injury and the clairo'of the representative teams. Technical Olds Boys, present holders of the Pollard Cup offered to ac cept challenges for the trophy but. as the chairman of the Management Committee. Mr. H. Frost, pointed out, that would provide games for two senior teams only each Saturday. It was decided that clubs unable tc field full teams should combine, as was done last season, the condition being made that no further temporary transfers would be granted once a olayer had lined out for a given team. EASY WIN FOR SOUTHLAND OTAGO’S CHALLENGE FAILS Press Association INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. Southland’s hold on the Ranfurly Shield was strengthened - today when Otago was defeated by 37 points to 5. This is Southland’s most convincing victory over Otago, whose team, however, was not at full strength today. Tho game was played in tine weather, although rain during the night had made the ground heavy and it became greasy as the play proceeded. Southland forwards played magnificently and were well supported by their backs, by whom most of the tries were scored. Southland dominated the first spell, in which Otago seemed quite unable to hold the vigorous pack, whose dash had diminished but little in the closing stages. After the interval Southland maintained its superiority and except on rare occasions was on attack. The backs showed to advantage and delighted the crowd with some spectacu-
lar passing bouts. T’he visitors were seldom seen on attack, but they went down gamely to a much superior team On today's showing the Southland pack will present formidable opposition to challengers for the shield.
