ART EXHIBITION OPENS

“INTEREST IS NOT LACKING” . One hears that art interest is lacking: here, but exhibitions such as this one show that there is a very general ancl very active interest in the city in art. said Dr. K. B. Gunson at the opening of the exhibition of New Zealand prints at the Art Gallery this afternoon. “This exhibition is representative and unique. There is an appreciable number of prints here which compare favourably with some I have seen in displays in England.” Dr. Gunson praised the work of Mr. T. V. Gulliver, who had considerably assisted Mr. John Barr in getting into touch with the people who had been in possession of the exhibits. Miss Melville had also done fine work in connection with the display. “I hope that the consultation of Miss Melville and others with the Minister of Education will bear fruit in that we shaH have a new Fine Arts building for the City.” he said. Dr. Gunson also referred to the valuable gift of Medici Prints made to the City by Mr. Moss Davis. Miss Melville said that in the last four exhibitions of this kind held in Auckland there had been an attendance of 1,500 people. This was a sure indication of the interest that exists here in such works. It was expected that the present displav would surpass previous ones in this respect, as the prints were of such high quality that all art-lovers should he drawn to the exhibition.
