SCOW OVERTURNS
MISHAP WHILE LOADING 50 TONS OF COAL LOST Sinking after springing a leak while loading coal from the collier Kaponga, at King’s Wharf, at noon today, the scow Moehau overturned, throwing a cargo of 50 tons of coal into the harbour. The vessel was removed with difficulty. There was no one on board the ship at the time, as loading had been completed, and this afternoon the scow, which is owned by the Northcote - Birkenhead Gas Company, was to have proceeded to the North Shore. T 14% vessel, an old wooden ship, sprang* a leak, and was seen to be sinking a few minutes before noon In a-quarter of an hour the water was almost on a level with the decking, and the scow overturned. A tug was soon on the scene, and a rope made fast to the overturned vessel, but the mast and rigging became entangled with the harbour bottom, and it was only after a long delay that she was towed round to a point between the Central and Queen's Wharves, where she will be righted by a crane later in the afternoon.
There is little hope of recovering much of the scow’s cargo of coal.
