INQUEST ON SAILOR DEPRESSED ABOUT HEALTH An inquest concerning the death of Thomas Carpenter, a seaman, aged 35, whose body was found floating in St. Mary’s Bay on Saturday afternoon, was opened before Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M., coroner, this morning, and adjourned. Thomas William Henry Cox, a seaman. of S St. Alban's Avenue. Dominion Road, identified tho body. He had known Carpenter for three years. He was a widower, aged about 33 or 34. and a native of Perth. Australia. He had formerly been a seaman on the Kaituna. and was put ashore at Wellington early iu June suffering from acute appendicitis. After an operatipn he had come to Auckland. “I have seen him every day for the last fortnight.” said witness. “Ou Saturday l met him in Queen Street and accompanied him to the Sailors' Home, where he was staying. He was very depressed on account of his health."

Carpenter said to witness. "Tommy. lam done. I will not see the night out.” This was about 11 a.m. Carpenter then said. ’lf anything goes wroijg with me. look after mv gear.” Witness decided to stop with him that day and night and made arrangements accordingly, but when he got to the Sailors’ Home and went to Carpenter’s room, he could not find him. The inquest was then adjourned.
