Sunday The Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s Australian Steeplechase Meeting opened at Caulfield yesterday. The principal event of the day, the Australian Hurdle Race, was Avon by the top-weight, Mosstrooper. Details ate: AUSTRALIAN HURDLE RACE Of £2,100; 3£ miles 20 yards. MOSSTROOPER (G. Rossgole was the pacemaker for a considerable part of the journey and led aver the first hurdle from Paul T. and Reonui. At the mile Swahilli had taken second place. Going out of the straight the second time round, Rossgole was eight lengths ahead of Swahilli, Paul T., Reonui and Mosstrooper. A mile from home the gap was increased to 3 2 lengths, but nearing th>3 top of the hill Rossgole was passed by Swahilli, while Polygonum’moved into a good position, but fell. Three furlongs from home Mosstrooper, coming steadily along, overhauled the tiring Swahilli, who at the last lump was headed by Darnley and Kentle. under the whip, secured third pla<je. Reonui was fourth. Won by three lengths, four lengths between second and third. Time, 6.125. Mosstrooper was warmly acclaimed on returning to the scale. He lias now won this event twice, also the Australian Steeples and the two Grand Nationals. He is considered to be the best jumper seen in Australia and tops the stake winnings over hurdles. The Australian Steeplechase, of £2.100, about 35 miles, will bo run next Saturday. Mosstrooper is tapweight with 3 2.10 and Kentle 12.2.
