EVIDENCE FROM COUNTRY
RAILWAY COMMISSION’S BUSY DAY ONEKUNGA’S INTEREST “The evidence of representatives of local bodies from the country and Onehunga was heard by the Railway Commission this morning. Further evidence by railway departmental officers is to be beard this afternoon and this evening. The commission's business in Auckland should be concluded by Wednesday afternoon, and the members will then return to Wellington.
On Saturday the sitting extended from 9.30 a.m. until 6 p.m., evidence being given by the chief railway officers here, including the divisional superintendent, Mr. E. Casey, the district traffic manager, Mr. J. G. Ilickerby, and the locomotive engineer for the North Island, Mr. D. W. Robertson. The chairman of the commission, the Hon. R. Masters. M.L.C.. announced that today the commission would sit from 9.30 a.m. until late in the evening, and this rate 6f progress was to be continued until all the evidence to be tendered here had been heard, which was expected to be on Wednesday afternoon. Probably the first business to be dealt with on returning to Wellington would be an examination of the Hutt workshops, continued Mr. Masters. After this the commission would sit in Christchurch and Dunedin, then returning to Wellington for the final stage of its inquiry. Appearing before the commission today are Messrs. B. C. Robbins. Mayor of Taurauga and president of the Bay. of Plenty Development League: W. F. Sinclair, chairman of the Tauranga County Council; J. H. Reid, chairman of the Opotiki County Council and also representing the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce; C. H. Fleming, town clerk of the Opuuki Borough; Harcombe and Harkness, president and secretary respectively of the Waiuku branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union; H. Lowe, representing the Thames County Council and the Thames branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union; C. S. Donovan, delegate for the Thames Chamber of Commerce; S. Ensor, representing the Thames Borough Council and the fishing and fruit industries of the district; E. Morton, Mayor of Onehunga; F. W. Mount joy, a member of the Borough Council; J. E. Green and D. H. Kirk-Jones, representing the Onehunga Chamber of Commerce. This afternoon the commission will hear the evidence of railway workshops officers from Otahuhu, including one man on the retired list.
