“TREATED FAIRLY"
PUBLIC AND THE PRICE OF LIQUOR BURDEN ON HOTEL-KEEPERS “The public is being treated as fairly as possible in the existing circumstances, brought about by economic conditions," said Mr. P. Brodie, president of the Auckland Licensed Victuallers' Association, this morning. HE confirmed the statement that there will be very little difference in the price of liquor over hotel bars to the public. The price of brandy remains unchanged by the bottle but will be sold in measures, exactly as whisky, gin and rum will be sold over the bar. Beer in the public bar will remain at 6d and 3d a glass, but in private bars all beers will be 6d. The increase in duty is falling principally on hotel-keepers, who will carry part of the increase in bottled spirits, the public paying the remainder. Hotel-keepers will carry the whole of the extra duty on beer. This now amounts to £ 216 s 3d a hogshead which, at the end of a year, amounts to a considerable sum. The official glasses of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, Mr. Brodie stated, will not be changed. -
He also stated that in future some mineral waters. for mixing with spirits, will be charged 3d extra. This will not apply to lemonade, gingerbeer or soda.
“The effect of the changes." said Mr. Brodie. “will be to make the sale of beer and spirits uniform in all hotels in the province. It will be impossible now for patrons to help themselves from a bottle of spirits as in the past."
