PORT OF NEW PLYMOUTH
INCREASE IN DUES Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH. Friday. All overseas vessels berthing at the port of New Plymouth from today will, be compelled to pay id a ton daily i harbour board dues. For the past 13 years the charge for overseas >• berthed at the port was no more for a fortnight than for a single day. In the past all Harbour Board rates at New Plymouth have been consistentlv low. making it one of the cheapest ports of call for overseas vessels in the Dominion. The port charge at New Plymouth was lowest in New Zealand, being only Id a ton. Coastal and intercolonial vessels have always had to pay a dail> rate for berthage but in 1917 the rate was lifted from overseas vessels to encourage them to call at the port That this policy of building up trad*has been justified is shown by the growth of overseas trade in recent years.
