MUST WIN

ON 'TOP LEFT OFF THE CARD AT RICCARTON TODAY More often than not, horses missing from published acceptance lists run into the money. Sometimes they win. It is a fetish with stay-at-home backers to pin their faith to a horse missed from the acceptances; that is, if they learn about the omission in time. Mostly they are in ignorance

until the result comes through. In the opinion of 90 per cent, of backers, a hors© left out of the acceptance lists must win. The latest case in point is that of On Top. This ex-Auckland hack was 'paid up for the Flying Hack Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt Club meeting at Ricarton this afternoon, but his name did not appear when the Auckland morning paper came out with its acceptance list on Thursday. Hence On Top was missed until references to the Surveyor gelding’s chances were telegraphed from Christchurch. The Flying Hack is timed to start at 4.30 p.m. today. On Top is one of the speediest hacks in commission, but he requires a verystrong horseman. It will be remembered that H. Gray failed to get him to leave the barrier at Taumarunui some weeks ago. Recently Mr. Norman Wade sold his share of On Top to Mr. D. Revell, and the horsp this afternoon will have his first race in the new colours registered by his owners, Messrs. G. Me-. Millan and D. R. Revell. Their livery is cerise and black chequers, cerise sleeves and cap. These colours are identical with Mr. McMillan’s trotting colours. On Top is now trained at Riccarton by R. Berry, whose health of late has been far from the best. Under these conditions On Top might not be thoroughly tuned up for today’s engagements, for he has to meet a couple of smart sprinters in Cliarmeuse and Desert Song. But, according to stay-at-home backers, On Top must win, for was lie not left out of the acceptances?
