PROTEST BY THE POPE
PLAY PUT ON THE INDEX IS PERFORMED MUSSOLINI PRESENT Pope Pius XI. has protested against the activities ot the wandering theatre, or Caro di Tespi, which gave recently one or Gabriele d’Annunzio's forbidden plays in a Roman square. The fact that Signor Mussolini was present did not make any difference. The protest was printed in "L'Osserva tore Romano,” the Papal daily journal, and stressed the bad taste of allowing a play that had been put on the index to appear in Rome, the “Sacred City.” One clause of the recent Concordat between Italy and the Holy See says: "In consequence of the sacred character of the Eternal City, episcopal See of the Sovereign Pontiff, centre of the Catholic world and goal of pilgrimages, the Italian Government will take precautions to prevent the occurrence in Rome of everything that might be contrary to this sacred character.” And the papal viewpoint is that plays the Inquisition bans on account of their immorality must never be given in Rome.
The play in question. “La Figlia di Jorio,” written in 19 days, has been given place of honour in the Caro di Tespi repertory.
