FIRST SEA LORD

SIR FREDERICK FIELD’S POST SIR CHAS. MADDEN RETIRES RUGBY, Wednesday. The appointment of Admiral Sir Frederick Field as First Sea Lord, in succession to Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Madden, dates from today. Sir Charles, who was appointed to •the post in July. 1927, has spent more than half a century in the service. He is 67 years old. The new First Sea Lord is 49. He entered the service in 1884. He relinquished the command of the Mediterranean Fleet last May. Admiral Sir Frederick Field lias been Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet for two years. Ilis war work was conspicuous and rewarded by mention in despatches, C.B. and C.M.G. He was knighted in 1923. and commanded the British Service Squadron on its world cruise of 1923-24. which included New Zealand in its itinerary
