MAORI YOUTH ACQUITTED

After five minutes’ consideration, a jury, in the Supreme Court today, found Pepene Ratu, an 18-year-old Maori, not guilty of charges of unlawful carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl of his own race. Mr. Justice Smith was on the Bench.

The alleged offences occurred at the girl’s home, at which the accused was liviug, following the recent Mangere carnival. Mr. V. N. Hubble, assistant Crown Prosecutor, conducted the prosecution, and Mr. Noble defended the accused.
