SITTINGS OF RAILWAYS COMMISSION VISIT TO OTAHUHU Members of the Railways Commission and the secretarial staff arrived on the Limited this morning and will commence sittings tomorrow. Public evidence will be taken on Monday and following days, but the sittings will not be open to the Press. The duration of the commission’s stay in Auckland is not yet fixed, but It probably will not be longer than a week. The members of the commission were met at the railway station this morning by Mr. E. Casey, Superintendent of Railways for the North Island. The party then went to the Grand Hotel, where accommodation had been arranged, and thence to the Otahuhu Railway Workshops. The commission consists of Mr. R. Masters, merchant, of Stratford (chairman); Mr. R. McVilly, exgeneral manager of railways; Mr. J. Marchbanks, engineer and' general manager for the Wellington Harbour Board, and Mr. J. D. Hall, barrister and farmer, of Christchurch. The purpose of the commission is “generally to review the administration and financial position of the department and recommend what, if any, steps might be taken to secure the proper balance of economy, efficiency and satisfactory service.” Sittings are being held in private in the ministers’ room at the Chief Post Office.
