A deputation from the Trades Hall unemployment committee protested to the Minister in charge of the relief of unemployment against the free meals being supplied by the Salvation Army, because the menu is not sufficiently varied and consists only of boiled mutton and potatoes. The Salvation Army’s kitchen has been declared “black,” but hunger has forced many unemployed men to disregard their leaders’ orders. The State Premier, Mr. E. J. Hogan, in the Assembly, made a statement that in the last 11 weeks 1,416 unemployed persons had failed to take advantage of work offered them. Unless these men made satisfactory explanations, they would be refused sustenance, he added.
