SMALL TEAMS

ELLERSLIE STRENGTH FOR THE NEW SEASON HORSES EVENLY DISTRIBUTED The near approach o£ the spring meetings has been responsible for bringing about a much brighter state of affairs, so far as training operations are concerned, at Ellerslie, and henceforth track operations ■will assume a more lively tone, especially after the Pakuranga Hunt meeting on August 23 when the spring racing in the new season will be ushered in by the Avondale and Auckland gatherings.

During the last few years Ellerslie has deteriorated considerably as a racing stronghold, but representatives from this quarter secured quite a few of the plumA during the now closing season and augmented by the many promising rising two-year-olds, the Auckland Racing Club’s training centre should be capable of securing its quota of success in the future. J. H. Jefferd should have a successful year with his youngsters, as his trio are all well spoken of, comments a Hastings writer. The colt by Tea Tray from Epitaph is going to be one of the early comers. On breeding he should be able to catch swallows, anc as he is shaping very satisfactorily in his work already many are awaiting the early two-year-old races. The full brother to Cylinder is a fine masculine eOlt that is not being unduly hurried for, like his brother, he most likely will not be seen anywhere near his best until the late summer meetings at the earliest. Cylinder is a picture of health. His programme will no doubt be "Wanganui. arid either the Avondale it Hawke’s Bay Guineas, then on to Wellington for the Harcourt Cup, and then the New Zealand Derby meeting.
