WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SWANSON BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Swanson Women’s Institute was held in the Swanson Hall recently. Tho vice-president, Mrs. Buchanan, presided over a good attendance of members. Airs. Teasdale, of Milford, demonstrated cream cheese-making and other recipes to be made out of leftover sour milk. Nominations for the annual meeting of the Provincial Federation were taken and it was decided to send a delegate to the Dominion Conference to be held in Wellington. A eompetition resulted in a humorous reading by Airs. W. Taylor, verses bv Airs. Buchan nan and" Perris, songs by Mrs. G. Taylor and Airs. Bond. This brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close. WARKWORTH ACTIVITIES The Warkworth Institute recently organised its first public meeting at which .Aliss Ellen Melville gave an address upon “New Zealand-made Goods.” Aluch interest was shown in the lecture. Recently the institute organised a rose pruning demonstration for the benefit of members and other roselovers. Mr. Wm. Hamilton gave a very interesting and thoroughly practical demonstration of the subject at the residence of Mrs. A. S. Carran. After the practical work was over those present were entertained to afternoon tea by Airs. Carran and Mrs. Nightingale.

ANNUAL DRAMATIC EVENING TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS On Friday evening, in the Rocklands Hall, the residential students of the Auckland Training College presented their annual dramatic evening. The guests were received in the entrance hall by Mrs. Aitchison, wearing a frock of black and gold georgette, and by Aliss Lorna Daragli (house captain), who wore blue floral ninon. The drawing room, which was used as the stage, and the social hall were prettily decorated with bowls of yellow daffodils and crimson foliage. The programme was opened by tho singing of several glees, arranged and conducted by Miss Margery Armour. Three plays were then presented, “The Phoby,” a one-act play by Mordaunt Sharp; “The Sack,” a farce by V. AT. Methley; and “The Legend,” by Phillip Johnson. Air. J. W. Shaw gave a most interesting introduction before each play. In between scenes, items were given by Miss Treacy Johnston (recitation). Miss Elsie AlcLaren (solo), and Alisses Wade, "Wood and Lamason (vocal trio). After supper the evening was concluded with dancing.
