WESTFIELD STOCK SALE • Westfield, 2.30 p.m. Beef met with a steady demand at Westfield today, although, on a heavier yarding than at the last two sales, prices tended to be slightly easier. Auctioneers’ quotations were not unchanged at up to 40s for best young ox, and up to 37s for best young cow and heifer beef. The feature of the sale was the heavy yarding of young calves, the first big entry of bobby vealers of the year coming forward. Calves came from all parts of the district, and. generally, met with a steady demand, exporters taking all fresh-dropped to four-weeks-old sorts. The offering of 290 steers was made up of some of the best quality seen in the yards for several weeks, a number of the best-known graziers in the province contributing to the offering. The cow and heifer entry, comprising 390 head, showed the best average quality for many months, a big percentage of station lines coming forward. Top price of the day was secured for a line of 10 light to extra choice prime steers on account Reid Bros-, Opotiki, which made up to £l7 for a beast which went to E. Wilson, Eden Terrace. Fifteen well-finished steers on account Williams and Campbell, Putaruru, made from £ll to £ls 7s 6d. A heavy prime big-framed steer on account C. Dickey, Waiuku. which went to T. Baster, Ponsonby, for £l6 15s. Fifteen, medium to heavy prime steers on account W. J. Craig, Waipipi, made from £l2 5s to £ls 6s. Twenty-two light to heavy prime steers on account Alex Robertson, Mangere, made from £ll 5s to £l4 17s 6d. One truck of well-finished steers on account G. Reed, Waerenga, made from £l3 10s to £ls 2s 6d. A truck of heavy prime cattle on account H. E- Reed. Waerenga, made from £l4 6s to £ls 7s 6d. Fourteen choice medium to heavy prime steers on account R. C. Morgan, made £l3 12s 6d to £ls 7s Gd. Choice prime turnip-fed mediumframed steers on account F. Brcgman. Waiuku, made from £l2 17s Cd to £ls 17s 6dExtra heavy prime steers made to £l7; heavy, £l2 10s to £ls 15s; medium, £l2 to £l3 ss; light and small, from £9; extra heavy young cows and heifers made to £l3; heavv prime, £9 to £11; medium, £7 to £8 15s; light and small, £ 5 10s to £6 15s; inferior and rough, from £4. The calf offering overflowed into the sheep-pens, and took until well into the afternoon to clear. Prices held steady at late rates for the greater part of the sale, extra prime 18months* heifers making to £9 17s 6d; ordinary runners made to £ 6 4s; heavy vealers made from £3 2s to £4 ss; medium from £2 2s to £3 3s; freshdropped to four-weeks-old calves made from 7s to 40s, according to quality.
