PETROLEUM SUPPLY
AMERICAN ESTIMATES It is estimated by the United States Bureau of Mines in Washington that, in 1029, one thousand and six million barrels of crude petroleum was produced in that country. This huge production total amounted to 67. 6 per cent, of the world’s output of petroleum. During 1929, other countries increased their production of petroleum to a considerable extent, but the great storehouse of this modern necessity is still the United States. The really interesting point' iu this announcement is the fact that in 1929, 44 per cent, of the total production of petroleum was turned into petrol. This compares with 41 per cent, reclaimed ill 1928. On a percentage basis the production of crude petroleum increased 12 per cent, over the output for 1928. One the other hand the production of petrol increased 15 per cent. Chemists are digging deeper aud deeper into the crude petroleum for motor fuel. Every year, equipment and methods improve and it will probably be only a short time when more than half the crude petroleum that comes out of the ground actually becomes petrol.
