ONEHUNGA COUNCIL

LOSS OF TRAFFIC FEES The Town Clerk reported to the Onehunga Borough Council, at: its meeting last evening, that he had been advised by Mr. W. J. Jordan, AI.P. for Alanukau, that the question of abolishing heavy traffic licence fees would probably come before Parliament during the current week, and the member for the district had asked for the council’s opinion on the subject. In the discussion which followed, It transpired that the council’s share of heavy traffic fees amounted to upward of £2.000 a year, and some natural reluctance was evinved to lose this revenue. It was surmised, however, that in view of the proposed increase of tho petrol-tax. it was the intention of the Government to grant some relief to owners of heavy vehicles at the expense of local bodies. The Alayor, Air. E. Alorton, contended that the council was entitled to adequate compensation for the wear and tear on roads, but in the absence of precise information as to the Government’s proposals he moved that the council take no action. This course was adopted. Cr. S. Vella, as a delegate to the forthcoming conference to establish an airport at Alangere, asked if it was the wish of the council to pay any portion of the purchase money. The Alayor, Air. E Alorton, replied that it was proposed to contribute an equitable quota of the cost, a proposal which was confirmed by the council. The question of the council’s loan proposals of £138,000, which were recently referred back for modification by the Local Government Loans Board, was discussed by the council in committee and deferred for one week.
