“ONE-MAN” SHOW
OPENED BY DR. GUNSON AUCKLAND ARTIST’S WORK The hope that other Auckland artists would organise and hold “one-man” shows was expressed by Dr. E. B. Gunson yesterday, when opening an exhibition of paintings by Airs. Alice F. Whyte. The exhibition, the first of its kind to be held in the Art Society’s new club rooms in the Victoria Arcade, may set a precedent for Auckland. Dr. Gunson, who is president of the Art Society, wished Airs. Whyte all success in her venture and it was not long before one of those encouraging red “sold” labels appeared on one of the pictures. In speaking of the new club rooms, Dr. Gunson stated that they were long overdue, but now that a definite step had been taken it was in the interests of artists and members of the society to support them until more accommodation could be provided. “One man” art shows were an undertaking which should bo strongly supported by the society. It was desirable that a wider appeal should be made to the general public other than the artists themselves, and such exhibitions would help to attain this end. Dr. Gunson said he felt that the work of tho artists of Auckland today had reached a standard which warranted the public acquiring it for their homes and for permanent collections. Ho went on to say that the society’s rooms also accommodated a workroom, which was available at all times to members. It had also been decided that members meet in the club rooms one night a week. . These were to be informal gatherings, at which artists and their friends could meet and discuss subjects of mutual interest. From theso gatherings a friendly spirit and comradeship would result. This would have a beneficial result on art generally. During tho afternoon Airs. Whyte entertained those present at afternoon tea.
