Obituary

MR. J. BURNETT The death has occurred after a short illness of, Mr. J. Burnett, well known in Waihi bowling and cricketing circles. He had been a resident of the district for about 18 years. MRS. J. D. BECK A well-known resident of Tauranga, Mrs. J. D. Beck, whose death has occurred, took a keen interest in the Piunket Society, the Girl Guide movement, the Citizens’ Hospital League, and the Presbyterian Church. She was born in Greenock, Scotland, the second daughter of the late Mr. Charles D. McGregor, and after finishing her education travelled extensively in the United States. She lived for some vears in California, and returned to Scotland in 1914 to take up war work. After the Armistice she became a teacher in a girls’ college at Lausanne, eventually coming to New Zealand seven years ago. Marrying Mr. Beck, she made her home at Tauranga, where she had since lived. She is survived by her husband.

CAPTAIN C. E. HOOD The death occurred this morning of Captain Charles E. Hood, aged 72, a well-known marine surveyor, at his home In Kipling Avenue, Epsom. Tales of the old sailing ships could be told by Captain Hood. He started his career at the time, when the clippers ran between England and China. When the sailers gave way to steamers he joined the Huddart-Parker Line and it was on one of this company’s vessels that ho first came to New Zealand. „ Later on. Captain Hood became harbourmaster at New Plymouth, but several years ago he resigned and came to Auckland, where he practised as a marine surveyor on his own account. The late Captain Hood frequently sat. on marine inquiry hoards and was a. well-known figure in tho Captain Hood married a daughter of the late Mr. J. J. Craig. He is survived by four sons a.nd one daughter.
