HAD £SO IN POCKET

NEW LIGHT ON HEBBEND DISAPPEARANCE DEBTS AMPLY SECURED Special to THE SUN NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. The mysterious disappearance of Arthur F. J. Hebbend, a builder, from his home in Tupaki Street. Fitzroy, on Tuesday morning and the discovery of a note on the ferry steamer Maori, still baffles the family. The police have begun inquiries and several fresh facts have been discovered that tend to show that Hebbend may not have thrown himself overboard in Cook Strait, as the note to his wife and the note in his wallet indicated. The elder son. Lyle Hebbend, who was the last of the family to see his father, states that Hebbend possessed some cash, probably exceeding £SO, and also that his father carried his cheque book with him. The contents of the wallet, when found by the chief officer of the Maori on Wednesday morning at Lyttelton, did not include a cheque book nor the cash. The papers that were found iu the wallet were merely old accounts and an estimate by a building firm in respect to a house Hebbend had built many months ago and which the family now occupies. The business card also was very old and referred to the days when Hebbend was a physical culturist and masseur In Wellington, where he was well known. PAID LONG AGO The accounts in the wallet, Mrs. Hebbend says, have been paid long ago. Mrs; Hebbend stated today that her husband always carried his money and cheque book in his wallet. The fact that they were not. in the wallet leads Mrs. Hebbend to believe her husband may have booked a passage under an assumed name on the Ulimaroa, which left Wellington on Friday for Sydney. The solicitor of Mr. and Mrs. Hebbend expressed great surprise, said Mrs. Hebbend. The solicitor considers that even though Hebbend may not have had assets in the form of liquid cash sufficient to meet all his creditors, the security in real property aud buildings would have more than met the liabilities. The home property and several newly-built houses, Mrs. Hebbend says, are in her name.
