PETONE WELLINGTON FINALIST MEETS THISTLE HERE SATURDAY Press Association W LLLIXGTOX, Saturday. The Chatham Cup provincial final was played on the Basin Reserve on Saturday in fine weather between Wanganui and Petone. The teams were: Wanganui.—Martin. Nelson. Proudfoot. Mackay, Jamieson. Davidson, Tregilds. Hope. Campbell. Meikle. Bain. Petone.—McVean. Haines. Brown. MoCauslin, Campbell, Smith. Baistow, Knox. Leslie. Rodds, Craig. Petone kicked off and pressed immediately. Wanganui was called on to defend strenuously for the first quarter of an hour, but Proudfoot and Nelson, the backs, came out of the ordeal well. Craig, the Petone rigat winger, centred dangerously, but the ball was cleared. Leslie made one or two dashes for Petone, but Wanganuife defence held. Then Petone scored unexpectedly. McCauslin tried a long shot from about 25 yards out and though Martin had plenty of time be could not get his hands to the leather. Petone 1, Wanganui 0. Wanganui’s play improved for a while, but soon slackened. The forwards found Petone's defence too solid and the score vas made 2 —o in favour of Petone when Leslie netted from close quarters. In a bright piece of play Wanganui forced matters and Tregilds centred. The Petone goalie, however, was safe, and half time was called with the score: Petone Wanganui 0. The second spell was tame, Petone enjoying a marked advantage over its opponents. Play for the most part wa? confined .to Wanganui’s half, though the visitors occasionally broke awgy. Leslie, Craig (2), and Knox scored for Petone. the game ending: Petone .. .. 6 . Wanganui -. 0
