Town Major Scores Again
RADI AC’S BIG STEEPLES SOME MILD SURPRISES Special to THE SUN TIMARU, Saturday. With an increase of £956 in the totalisator turnover as compared with last year, the South Canterbury Hunt Club staged a very successful meeting today'. Added interest was the contest between Gray and Ellis for the jockey premiership, and with a win going to each, and only Thursday’s racing at Awapuni to go, Gray can now be considered safe for the honour. He has now ridden 74 winners and Ellis 70. Hadlow Hurdles Nlcmbo, the favourite, hopped out to make the pace hot in the Hadlow Hurdles, but after they had gone half a mile Gay Fashion went up to him and the pair cleared away out in front along the back from Hard Prince, Exido and Gold Mint. On the turn into the straight Exide closed the gap the pacemakers had made and forging to the front, just led over the last fence from Gay Fashion and Membo. Gay Fashion was not to be denied, however, and she came again 50 y'ards from the post to snatch victory from Exide by a neck, when her cause appeared lost. It was a valiant attempt and stamps her as one likely to do a lot better shortly'. Membo was threequarters of a length farther away third, with Gold Mint, Fairness and Hard Prince following in that orderMembo made a very bad jump three furlongs from home, otherwise he might have paid a dividend. Hunters’ Steeplechase Tractarian owed his victory in the Pareora Hunters' Steeplechase to superior jumping, for he was the only one of the field not to blunder- Going into the back the last time he ran up to Deportment and the pair held a small advantage along the stretch from Barrington (who was fencing riskily) and West Dome, with the others hopelessly out of it. Deportment fell at the second to last fence and brought Barrington over. This left Tractarian with a substantial lead, and he went on to win by 11 lengths from West Dome, with Willow Glen 20 lengths farther away third and Marco l’olo next. Te IJaunui was the only other to finish. Barrington might have troubled the winner it Deportment had not brought him down. The Big Steeplechace The South Canterbury Steeplechase was an uneventful race. Kadiac was the last of the five competitors over the first round, but he then moved up to the van, and putting a break of several lengths on French Fleet, Diamond Jack, Radiate and Valves along the back, was never afterward threatened. He led French Fleet and Diamond Jack over the last brush and went on to easy victory by three lengths, with another six lengths back to Diamond Jack. Neither Radiate nor Valves ever looked like being a winner. Ths Cornier attempted to improve about half a mile from home, but hit a fence hard and then dropped right out of it. He certainly’ does not lock a National prospect. Levels Hack
When the line was broken in the Levels Hack Handicap Sweet Refrain was lying in behind Homecoming, Nlemories, Rosewood and Valuator, with P”air Money, Royal Limond and Rapina (who appeared to be squeezed back early) next. Sweet Refrain moved forward on the bend and although Homecoming still had the udvantago coming into the straight, she quickly’ collared him and went on to win by three lengths from Royal Limond, who held off Rapina by half a length. Homecoming was fourth and then came Nlemories, Valuator. Night Effort and Fair Money’. This is the winner’s first success since being brought in after a spell a few weeks ago. Washdyke Trot Cranleigh, winner of the Washdyke Trot, was always the leader and although it appeared that both Danny Boy and Derry Pointer would beat him a few chains off the post he stuck to his task valiantly and gained the decision over the little-fancied Danny Boy by a short head, with Derry Pointer only’ another neck away third. Otaio Rose was a poor fourth, and next were Red Shiner and Happy Lass. Real Girl and Happy Lass shared with Cranleigh the early pacemaking. Real Girl cried quits with less than a mile gone and Happy Lass was second into the straight, but did not finish on well. Mary Locanda and Norwester were prominent early’. Hunt Cup The Teschemaker Hunt Steeplechase early developed into a procession and after the field had gone a mile Ngahue was leading Faloose, Wairio, Kulrange and Scion. Faloose toppled over at the top of the straight. Past the stands the second time Ngahue was 20 lengths in front of Wairio, with Scion and Kulrange together another dozen lengths back. Ngaliuc never let the others close on him and after making a bad fault at the mile jumped the remaining obstacles like a deer and won pulling up by 30 lengths from Scion, who finished much more strongly than Wairio. Kulrange also completed the course. Hunters’ Plate Fresh Breeze was a long way back early in the Hunter’s Plate Handicap, but he began to move forward along the back and as the field swung into the straight he had only Commentor, Gold Mint and West Dome ahead of him. A. E. Ellis, on West Dome, had the first run and he quickly settled the pretensions; of Commentor and Gold Mint. Then Fresh Breeze took him on at the distance, and although it looked as though he would hold his challenger off long enough his saddle slipped at a critical moment and he lost the race by a nose. Commentor was four lengths farther away and then cam© All Comment, Gold Mint and Bonatic. Both winner and rurmer-up carried the same total on the machine. Commentor, a hot favourite, was well beaten. Claremont Handicap Town Major was a very hot favourite for the Claremont Handicap and lie won like a champion. In the early h x T Was bellind Beau Geste, Royal Mint, Haze and Taboo, but he improved throughout and was in front entering the straight. From here he simply had to be kept to his task to win easily by two lengths from Sweet Refrain, who came from well back to beat Taboo by a neck. Evening was finishing fast in fourth place and after her were First Raid, Oriflamb and Topere. The following are the results: Hadlow Hack Hurdles, of £110: 1 1 miles.—4 Gay Fashion (C.
