IMPORTED TOBACCO LEAF
REDUCED DUTY OPPOSED A strong protest against the reported reduction in tiie duty on imported tobacco leaf was made this morning by a meeting of the federation of the New Zealand Tobacco Growers in the Auckland Province. Hr. Horton was in the chair. The report that the duty on imported tobacco leaf was to be reduced by* Is a pound was discussed at length. Members stated that it would have a detrimental effect on the tobaccogrowing industry in New Zealand, which had now* reached very* large proportions. The meeting decided to oppose the proposed tariff reduction, and definite steps will l*e taken to achieve this end. A deputation will leave for Wellington tomorrow evening to place the federation’s views before the Prime Alinister, the Hon. G. Forbes. After the meeting today the following telegram was forwarded to Mr. Forbes: “That this meeting of tlie federation of Auckland tobacco-grow-ing companies emphatically protests against the suggested reduction of dutyon imported leaf, as reported in the Press.”
Copies of the telegram have also been sent to the following members of Parliament: The Hon. H. Atmore. the Hon. J. G. Coates, the Hon. J. B. Donald, the Hon. A. J. Stallwortliy. the Hon. A. J. Alurdoch. Messrs. Black. Mason, Jordan, Parry, AfcMillen. Ciinkard, Lysnar, 1 ounj.*, Fraser, Savage. Harris, and tlie Hon. Snodgrass, AI.L.C.. and the Hon. Mclntyre. AI.L.C.
