MATU FAVOURED
TRENTHAM’S BIG HOPE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE One of the most important of the Trentham contingent at the present time is Matu. He has shown a distinct improvement in the last few weeks, and gives the impression at at length he is coming good. Trentham track frequenters have had a high opinion of him for several seasons, but he has never lived up to tlieir ideas of him. He was running a good race when he fell in the Wellington Steeplechase and won the July Steeplechase a few days later in excellent style. That was the best rape he lias ever run, but he has done exceptionallv well since and now that it is known that R. Syme, who won the last two Grand National Steeplechases on Wiltshire, will be in the saddle, he is coming into favour for the big cross-coun-try event to be run at Riccarton next month. In Wellington it is doubtful if there is any horse better fancied for the race. Matu worked well at Trentham on Thursday morning.
