HERE-AND THERE

WON ON SAME DAY STAGHUNTER-GREENMANTLE When Greenmantle dead-heated witn Bludale at Rosehill on July 12, it was not the only success which had come to the New Zealand sportsman, Mr. E. L. Rid diford, during the week. Staghunter won for Mr. Riddiford at Trentham on the same -afternoon. It is rather interesting: that Mr. Riddirord should be scoring in the Dominion with the Australian-bred Staghunter (Quantock—Polaire), and winning in Australia with the New Zealandbred Greenmantle (Kilbroney-Mascot). Mr. Riddiford paid 300gns. for Staghunter as. a yearling, but he br.ed Greenmantle. Won Auckland Cup Mascot, the dam of Greenmantle, was sold at auction in Sydney time ago for 350gns. She had a foil at foot by Limond. She was by Martian, and her victories on the turf included an Auckland Cup, two miles. As Kilbroney has sired many good stayers in the Dominion, it is thougnt that Greenmantle may be a stayer, but, until Rosehill he had been disappointing, and he may require time to reach his best. In June Greenmantle was entered for several of the important spring handicaps, but up to the present it does not seem as if punters will have to give his case much consideration. His recent dead-heat was the first placing to come the way of Greenmantle.
