RATEPAYERS PROTEST
CLOSING OF NORTH SHORE ROAD BIRKENHEAD-ALBANY ROUTE Protests will be made officially next week against the proposed action of the Waitemata County Council to close the central portion of the Birkenhead—Albany n ain highway for experimental concreting. It is held that this will cause serious inconvenience to farmers and a considerable dislocation of the traffic. A letter protesting against the proposed action of the County Council was published in The Sun yesterday, also an interview with the Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. J. P. Mqphail, who considered the scheme of closing the road would indeed be serious to farmers and trades people. When approached again this morning, Mr. McPhail said that, as yet, nothing of a definite nature had been done, but the question"would be thoroughly discussed at a meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council next Wednesday evening, and it would not be until after this that the official protests would be made to the Waitemata County Council. In the meantime it was intended to request the County Council to prepare a statement on the position. “I certainly realise the seriousness of closing the road and something will have to be done,” said Mr. McPhail.
