DEATH-RATE MOUNTS TO THOUSANDS. —Almost the whole of Southern Italy, from Naples to the Gulf of Taranto, has been wrecked by a series of terrible earth quakes, and the death-rate is unofficially estimated to be over 3,000. The picture shows the sea-front at Salerno, just south of Naples, where the 11th century cathedral has been practically destroyed by the shocks.
