RICCARTON WORK

FINALS FOR TIMARU SYDNEY TEAMS DEPART Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. There was little jumping at Riccarton this morning, other than the school by Lord Ranald and Wharncliffe. Short fencing tasks, however, were given Kaikaliu, After Ten, Gala Gay, Pangolin and Kilrange, all of whom acquitted themselves with credit. As a result of his unfortunate mishap, the useful hurdler Heisler had to be destroyed. He was badly injured in a fall while schooling, and as a veterinary opinion was that his case was hopeless he was destroyed. The best time among the flat galloperes this morning was registered by Lord Thomond, who did half a mile up the back on the trial grass in 49 4-5. The three-year-old is well forward for his engagements next month. Promising Novices Kakara and Riri were sent five furlongs together, doing the full distance in 1. 6 3-5 and taking 52 for the half mile. Both should show up in the Cashmere Plate on the first day of the Grand National meeting, as they have been working attractively for some time. Amorist did seven furlongs in 1.34. Swiftray, Pride and Greenaway went half a mile together at a good threequarter pace. Ozone was the only member of R. J. and P. V. Mason’s team to gallop fast, and for half a mile he registered 52 1-5. The Aus-tralian-bred two-year-old is the most forward horse in the stable at present, but all are coming along fast. Night march's assignment was five furlongs, but he did not warm up to his work till he had gone a furlong. He came home over the last half mile in 50 1-5. A. McAulay also galloped the rising two-year-olds Water Polo (Pombal —Waterwings) and Static (Hunting Song—Eerie), and botli showed plenty of pace. Trip in the Air No decision has yet been made whether they shall accompany Nightmarch and True Shaft to Australia next month. Solgele galloped alone over a mile ia 52 3-5. His trainer (W. McDonald) has him looking well at present. Charmeuse and Sleipner did half a mile together along the back, Jmt were not timed. Sleipner has come in looking in excellent condition after a spell. Appeal alone did half a mile in 51 3-5, a good gallop. Starshooter and Troilus took 1.8 to do the last five of a six-furlong trial, but were not extended. On Top pleased by his clean action in galloping seven furlongs. The full distance took 1.37 2-5, and the last six furlongs 1.24 3-5. Rapina was three lengths too good for Sweet Refrain at the end of six furlongs, done in 1.21 4-5. She came home over the last half-mile in 54. Two Good Trials The half-sister by Paladin to Rapine has done two fine trials this week and must enter into consideration for the Levels Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. Haze and Fresh Breeze were sent seven furlongs and for the last six registered 1.23 4-5. Haze had the better of it at the finish. Bulolo and Huntley took 1.8 3-5 for five furlongs, but they were slow away and with the pace on over the final half-mile recorded 53 1-5. Satisfy galloped a smart half-mile in 52. She has no near engagements, but will probably be raced at the Dunedin spring meeting. Royal Mint and Rascal went six furlongs together in 1.22. Radiate was not schooled. but he was sent a mile with Gold Mint. The first half took 56 1-5 and the final half a second longer, making the time for the full distance 1.53 2-5. Gold Mint had about a length the better of it at the post. Radiate will go to Washdyke to contest the South Canterbury Steeplechase and he will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. Tariff was not doing his best over five furlongs to register 1.8. Bladon went once round on the inside track at a good working pace, but

was not schooled. W. Scobie will ride him in the Hunters’ Steeples at Washdyke. Phastar, who broke down badly at the last New Zealand Cup meeting and had to be turned out, showed no signs of coming right again and it has been deemed necessary to destroy him. Left for Sydney F. D. Jones left this evening for Wellington to connect up with the boat for Sydney. His team comprised Limerick, First Sight, Paquito, Arikiwai. Craigavon and Dunraven. and it should much more than pay its way on the other side. T. Lloyd also left this evening on the way to Sydney. His team is made up of three chestnuts—Gay Crest. Adelphi and the rising two-year-old Royal Baby (Chief Ruler—Baby Doll), the brother to Royal Ruler.
