Owner Mitchell Heads Stake-Winners' List
PADLOCK’S QUOTA TRAINER HUGHES’S PART Mr. J. A. Mitchell, the popular Palmerston North trotting owner has had a most successful season. He heads the list of New Zealand winning owners, while his “wonder*' horse Padlock is at the top of the tree among the stake-earners. During the season just concluded Padlock put lip some remarkably good performances, and his cheque reached the fine total of £2,387.* The Hal
Zolock pacer opened his account auspiciously at the National carnival last August when he accomplished the “hat trick,” scoring decisively each day, and tramping two miles in 4.21. At the November fixture the Longburn pacer captured the Free-for-All in great style, defeating the recordholder, Peter Bingen. The big gelding was again in form at the Auckland Christmas meeting, dead-heating for third berth in the Cup with Machine Gun, while in the Champion Stakes he shared the first prize with Kotaara. Padlock has proved a great stakeearner for Mr. Mitchell during recent seasons, and while he is now in retirement, he may again sport silk, providing, his owner says, limits of highclass races are tightened up. Owner Mitchell’s team during the season won £4,534 —a splendid total. Gang Awa* accounted for £845, while the trotters Rangitero and Tamahlne netted £447 and £445, respectively. The balance of the Longburn cheque was made up by High Sea, Caballero and Short Story, who each won a race. This is the fourth successive season that Mr. Mitchell has collected good prize-money. Last season his horses won £2,957, while in 1927-28 his tally was £3.581, Padlock £1,755, and Loch Moigh £1,055, securing the bulk of the money. For the season 1926-27 the Palmerston North sportsman collected £1,210. Happy Combination Mr. Mitchell is to be complimented on his success, which is well deserved.
He is a keen trotting enthusiast, breeds on sound lines, buys in the best markets, and spares no expense to secure high-class representatives. Racing purely for the sport, J.A.M.’s colours are always popular on the many courses he so freely patronises The Longburn owner is fortunate in possessing a capable, reliable and conscientious trainer and driver in W. Hughes, to whom must be given a large measure of praise for the success of the grey and cerise livery. The MitchellHughes combination is a happy one. and there is an atmosphere of understanding between owner and trainer that spells success. W. Hughes will have a useful team under his charge for the new season, and the Longburn stable should have another successful year. TROTTING FIXTURES August 9, 13, 15—N.Z. Metropolitan T.C.
