COUNCIL CONSIDERS QUESTION OF NEW POLL POINT DUTY CONSTABLES Some discussion on the holding of another loan poll on a proposal to widen Station Street occurred at a meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last evening. It was decided to obtain the opinion of the Local Government Loans Board as to the legality of another poll. When the minutes of a speck. 1 meeting last week, at which the council decided to drop the proposal, came up for confirmation. Mr. R. Newport objected. Latham moved that the minutes bo referred to the council's next meeting, and that the borough solicitor be asked to give an opinion. The Loans Board should be asked whether another poll could legally be taken. Mr. W. J. Jaffrey seconded the motion. Mr. W. Hughes: Would Mr. Latham bo agreeable to holding another poll if the Loans Board grave its approval? “That is a different question-one for the council to decide,” replied Mr. Latham. Mr. Philpott: In a few years the property needed to widen the street will cost three or four times as much as it does now. Mr. Michaels rose to a point of order. The motion was carried. A petition from 130 ratepayers was considered in committee. PRAISE FOR FIRE BRIGADE Several members expressed appreciation of tho efforts of the Firo Brigade, particularly of the superintendent. The report of the Newmarket Brigade showed that during the year tho superintendent had attended 7u out of 77 musters. A report presented at the meeting remarked on the continued absence of infectious disease in the borough, no notifications having been received since Easter. An alternative design for a memorial to Miss Outh waite, donor of Outhwaite Park, was under consideration, stated another report. The original intention had been to erect a memorial tablet, but a suggestion for an archway over the Carlton Gore Road entrance to 'he park was now before tho committee. WHITE GLOVES FOR TRAFFIC MEN The council received a letter from tho Automobile Associat.on, suggesting arrangements should be made for constables on point duty after dark to wear white gloves, instead of the black ones at present used.
