“HARSHLY TREATED”
ORDERING OFF OF KNIGHT RUGBY UNION’S DECISION “We all think Knight has been harshly treated and it is hardly likely he will be punished by the Judicial Committee,” declared Mr. Baker, when the question of the ordering off of L. Knight in the match between Britain and Auckland came before the Rugby Union Management Committee last evening. A letter was received from the referee, Mr. J. Moffitt, reporting that he had ordered off Knight for questioning his decision. It was suggested that the report be referred to the Judicial Committee for consideration on Friday afternoon, but certain members were of the opinion that there was no case to send forward to the Judicial Committee as the referee had tendered no evidence beyond his report. Mr. A. Tilly, chairman of the Junior Management Board, said a report, sent in to his board in such a fashion, would not receive consideration. It was pointed out that, if the report were sent forward to the Judicial Committee, Knight would be given a chance to call evidence in mitigation of any punishment that might be imposed. Mi'. A. Belcher moved, an an amendment, that the case be dealt with immediately by the Management Committee owing to the indefiniteness of the charge. Mr. Baker was of the opinion that the report should go before the Judicial Committee which had been set up to deal with such incidents. The general opinion was that Knight had been very harshly treated an<} it was unlikely that there would be any punishmenL Mr. Belcher’s amendment was lost by six votes to four and it was agreed that Knight should be asked to appear before the Judicial Committee at 1 p.m. on Friday.
