BUS HIT BY TRAIN
DRIVER FINED £5 MAGISTRATE WARNS OTHERS From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Wednesday. In fining Charles Leonard Gifford, a bus driver, £5 for attempting to use a railway crossing when it was engaged, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court today issued a general warning to drivers of service vehicles. He recalled the Hikurangi smash, and said that although the present ease was not a serious one, defendant must be penalised as a warning to others. Senior-Sergeant Sweeney said that the defendant was driving a bus from Hamilton to Morrinsville when his vehicle was struck by the CambridgeHamilton train at the Newstead crossing. One passenger was slightly injured. Mr, A. L. Tompkins said defendant’s view of the line was obstructed by some trees and by the Newstead Hall. Defendant exercised great presence of mind when he saw the train and swerved the bus to the left. The right front wheel of the vehicle only was struck. Defendant suffered great shock and had since been under medical treatment.
