“VENGEANCE”
FINE DRAMA WITH JACK HOLT ROXY’S PROGRAMME An interesting story, splendidly acted and staged with careful attention to detail, was flashed on the screen of the Roxy Theatre last evening. It is “Vengeance,” Columbia Pictures alltalking drama of the Congo, with Jack Holt, Dorothy Revier and Phillip Strange. Archie Mayo directed. Interest in the story centres about a group of people in an isolated trading post in West Africa. John Meadham, who has been head of the post for several years, is leaving. His place is to be taken by Charles Summers, an egotistical, stubborn person. When Summers arrives in the blistering tropics with his young, charming wife, he is severely censured. An antagonism develops between Meadham and Summers. Quarrels between Meadham and Summers eventually * lead to a disagreement between husband and wife. Margaret, helpless in her predicament, appeals to Meadham, and the two fall in love. How the network of intrigue that surrounds these three interesting characters is eventually unwound, supplies the action for the remainder of the picture. In distributing acting honours, first praise must go to Jack Holt, who gives a splendid performance as Meadham. Dorothy Revier looks beautiful and gives her usual capable performance as Margaret. Phillip Strange proves his histrionic ability by making himself thoroughly disliked as Summers. Here is film fare that has entertainment value. A number of particularly interesting talking and singing featurettes complete a most enjoyable programme.
