THEODORE MAY FACE CHARGES FROM DOCK
MINE LEASE SCANDAL LEGAL ACTION PENDING United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 10.5 a.m. BRISBANE, Today. Legal action is to be taken against Mr. E. G. Theodore, former Federal Treasurer, following the findings of the Chillagoe and Mungana Royal Commission. The Premier, Mr. E. A. Moore, has advised Mr. Theodore of the Government’s intentions. Legal advice as to the practicability of criminal action has not yet been received, but if this is unfavourable civil proceedings will be taken. The Commissioner who inquired into financial transactions in connection wtih the Mungana leases and the Chillagoe Smelters in Queensland found that Mr. E. G. Theodore, then Federal Treasurer and former Premier of Queensland, and Mr. William McCormack, also a former Premier of Queensland, had been guilty of dishonest practice. Mr. Theodore was asked to give evidence at the inquiry, but he was unable to do so. Soon after the decision of the Commissioner was announced Mr. Theodore resigned from Mr. Scullin’s Cabinet and severely attacked the finding of the inquiry. He subsequently declared he will not reenter Federal politics until his name has been cleared.
